Pravda to celebrate 25th Anniversary @ Abbey Pub in Chicago

Chicago, IL – Influential independent Chicago record label Pravda Records is proud to announce a celebration of its 25th Anniversary with a special concert at The Abbey Pub (3420 W. Grace, at Elston). Starring three Pravda Records stalwarts, The Service, The Slugs and Boom Hank, the concert takes place Friday, January 22, with advance tickets on sale now.

In addition to celebrating a quarter of a century of acclaimed releases by such other notable acts as Wake Ooloo, The New Duncan Imperials, The Farmers, Cheer Accident, The Sleepers, The Goldstars, Andre Williams, Glenn Mercer, Tiny Tim, Big Daddy Sun, The Young Fresh Fellows, Civil Tones, Susan Voelz and many more, this show marks the first time in more than a decade that these three bands have appeared together on the same bill.

The Service was Pravda’s flagship band, and Pravda Records grew out of a desire for the band (formed in DeKalb, IL in the early ‘80s) to release their own material. They honed their melodic, punk-infused roots rock over the course of five studio LPs and incessant, nationwide touring. Recently revitalized, they’ve been stepping back into the spotlight and performing with their trademark fury and skill, and now enjoy the enviable position of being able to choose from a wealth of stellar material to build their set lists. Word has it they’re even testing new material.

The Slugs’ return is certainly one of the most curious of the evening, not to mention one of the most hotly anticipated among the band’s still large and loyal following. Throughout its 20-plus-year history, the group was known just as much for its fiery, wildly spontaneous performances and soaring pop as it was for its storied inter-group tensions. The band’s performances have been scarce at best since the 2000 release of their acclaimed third album, “Junior”, a driving collection of urgent, well-crafted Midwestern pop/rock, and with no plans for further shows following this one, Slugs fans are encouraged not to miss this event.

Boom Hank may be the most enigmatic of the three bands, having followed the searing, melodic, defiantly raw roots rock of their Pravda debut “Nuisance” with the skewed, murky post rock of the Brian Deck produced “Ishly Ghost Fly Your I & Y”. That Boom Hank can so gleefully thumb their nose at musical convention while remaining so accessible is a tribute to their dexterity as musicians as well as the quality of their material.

Pravda Records continues to release new material, and is in the process of making its large back catalog of vinyl-only releases available digitally for the first time ever. Recent years have seen the company (formed by The Service’s keyboardist Kenn Goodman, a Skokie native) increasing its song licensing efforts and finding great global success with television, commercial and movie placements for its artists. This show pays a long overdue tribute to Goodman’s vision, Pravda’s high caliber stable of talent, and a sensibility that, while rooted in the do-it-yourself-and-do-it-on-vinyl heyday when the seeds of indie rock were being planted, continues an unchallenged relevance in this day of the digital download. Long Live Pravda!

Shitride

Just in time for the Holidays, a classic Pravda Records release is now available digitally for the first time! You can now download:

Thirteen Nightmares "Shitride" (1989) - iTunes link.

A loud, fascinating collision of guitars and socially aware lyrics. The only release by this Lincoln, Nebraska band whose members made up the trio Mercy Rule. "Shitride" was way ahead of it's time, sounding even more relevant today than it's original release in 1989.

NDI 20th Anniversary Tour

It's hard to believe, but New Duncan Imperials sprung to life in Chicago 20 years ago as they startled the club scene with its overpowering live show and reckless disregard for boundaries, confronting unsuspecting crowds with a blizzard of gloriously heavy riffage and free-association lyrics that ran the course from the Brady Bunch to Friedrich Nietzsche. And after countless CD/LP/cassette/8-track releases, several grueling tours, hundreds of confetti cannons blasts, miles of silly string spray & mountains of “free shit” handed out to fans, NDI keeps on rolling along with a grin.

All these years Iowa & Illinois have always held a special place in the boy’s hearts, so it’s only fitting they kick off this special 20th Anniversary Tour with shows @ The Mill in Iowa City, IA on Friday, August 21st & Rascals in Moline, IL on Saturday, August 22nd. Also to mark this historic achievement, Pravda Records will be releasing a special 20th anniversary edition of their first album “Hanky Panky Parley Voo!” in August. This CD will contain the classic album re-mastered with rare bonus material.

The Service Re-Surface

In the Chicago rock scene of the 1980's there were few bands like The Service. An adventurous, full-speed-ahead, deeply American rock band, The Service never achieved the fame -- or notoriety -- of fellow midwesterners The Replacements or Husker Du. But like those bands, they define a time and a state of mind that reflected the liberating effects of the punk and new wave revolutions. The Service roamed the land in the days when a band could, without warning, break into a half-baked country cover; break up laughing in the middle of a "serious" moment; and then break your heart with a song that somehow summed up everything you were going through in your own life. They played with abandon and good humor, and they left a legacy of recorded material and vivid memories.

Now they are back! This is not some one-off reunion, but something much more. I don't mean to be weird, but this ragged American rock n' roll band STILL has something to prove. Please catch them at Otto's in Dekalb, IL on August 23rd 2009. The Service still have 'it' and are eagar to deliver...

Black Smokers invade US & join Pravda Records!

The Black Smokers are passionate about the blues tradition but hate to follow all the rules. From Alessandria, Italy, this downhome-psycho-rock-blues duo doesn’t hide their deep love for Delta Blues artists such as Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson & Blind Lemon Jefferson. More recent influences include RL Burnside, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash & AC/DC. In March 2009 we’ll be releasing their new album titled “Used” and you’ll hear guitarist Marcello “Blues” Milanese & drummer Ivano “Little Lung” Zanotti’s strong desire to keep things simple, loose and in the moment. After releasing several albums and touring extensively in Europe, they took the US by storm in 2008. Along the way, Black Smokers raised eyebrows and laid their foundation. Now armed with a brand new album, look for a triumphant return in early March (specific tour dates coming soon). Please visit Black Smokers Myspace site for updates & more information.

It's Coming!

It's hard to believe it now, but before 1989 no band had ever combined the explosive elements of white trash culture, Dada art and Chuck Berry. There was a gaping hole in the fabric of popular entertainment and the New Duncan Imperials sewed it up. Springing to life in Chicago almost 20 years ago, the band startled the club scene with its overpowering live show and reckless disregard for boundaries, confronting unsuspecting crowds with a blizzard of gloriously heavy riffage and free-association lyrics that ran the course from the Brady Bunch to Friedrich Nietzsche.

On Tuesday, October 7th Pravda Records will proudly release the first new album by The New Duncan Imperials in nearly eight years titled "End Of Phase One". Bristling with the kind of straight-ahead-yet-twisted songs that characterize their best work, this album reveals a band that is tough, vital, and still poking rock in the ribs.

2008: The Year Of The Dre

Chicago, IL – 2007 was certainly an up & down year for the 72 year old “Black Godfather” Andre Williams. The year started with a successful tour across the US & Europe, fuel by the late 2006 release of “Aphrodisiac” (Pravda) w/The Diplomats Of Solid Sound. But by mid-2007 Andre was evicted from his senior housing building in Joliet, IL for a minor drug possession. This conviction lead to a short jail term, something Andre experienced for the first time in his life. Then because of an ongoing battle with alcohol abuse & not visiting his doctor on a regular basis, Mr. Williams collapsed and was quickly rushed to the hospital. He had a seizure and his body was basically shutting down due to the diagnosis of pneumonia, alcohol poisoning and heart problems. But Andre cleaned up, resumed taking his medication & ended 2007 on a positive note & for the first time in a long time, friends said Andre talked about new album projects & performing live. Dre seemed determined & focused about his career more than ever.

This determination & focus lead to "Agile, Mobile & Hostile: A Year With Andre Williams", a documentary film by Tricia Todd & Eric Matthies (Ayamye, Making ‘The Matrix’) set for release early this year. Mr. Williams has also recently recorded a new album with The New Orleans Hellhounds set for release on Bloodshot Records this spring. He also hooked up with Chicago garage rockers The Goldstars for a successful stop in Spain, a release of a 7” single (It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N’ Roll) b/w Fight For Your Right”) on Spanish Munster Records & live dates across the Midwest. They will once again team up and perform Thursday, February 7th @ The Hideout in Chicago. So look out Chicago & rest of the World, Andre Williams is determined to make 2008 his best year yet.

Mr. Williams is available for interviews. Also photos are available upon request.
